things moved along nicely again today. finished up the drums for ‘nothing else’, got it into pro tools, and tracked the acoustic. then i ignored it for the rest of the day and worked on ‘we live’ instead. i just listened to it again though and i think i need to redo the acoustic….i don’t think i played it right toward the beginning.

now ‘we live’ was an interesting experience, and is what i spent the majority of the day on. this is definitely the fastest song i’ve written and so it was my first attempt at building a pretty intense drum track. it clocks in at a speedy 158 bpm, which is pretty darn fast. this is also the first song i’m doing that has no acoustic guitar in it at all, which is also different. i still recorded the rough placement track with the acoustic which was weird, and it took while to figure out what sort of feel i wanted in each section. the bridge part slows down to this half-time thing and i think there can be some cool fill stuff in there. but anyway, i tracked electric rhythm and even worked out a lead part after several attempts. i’ll say this: when you don’t play lead all the time, coming up with something and then getting good enough record it without making any mistakes involves a lot of takes. but i think i’ve got it where i want it now.

there’s still more work to do on it; more lead stuff, some fills in the bridge and vocals of course. but i’m pretty excited about this one now. also since i didn’t have the bass at home this week none of these songs have bass yet; and this one i’m particularly excited to work out a bass part because i think it will really fill this one out. i’m going to get it sunday and hopefully do bass for all these next week.
