i had a go at some vocals today. my suspicions that i would hear missing parts more easily with vocals in the mix were partially confirmed, and so i forged ahead. i didn’t really listen to everything that i did but they all felt good going in, and the bits i heard seemed to be pretty clean, on key and at a good level, which was encouraging. i covered cannot escape, make me whole, are you here, consume, and rise.  (as you can see i’ve started highlighting the song titles; i don’t know why, it just seemed like a good idea).

i was going to get questions and you are never really gone as well but noticed a few issues. the former needs to lose the first jump to the chorus, so i have to redo the guitar and synth (though i might just be able to cut it out, which would be considerably easier). and the latter i recorded without a click track (since it’s just guitar and vocals); but it seems i need one since the acoustic is really too fast for the song.

bethany helped me brainstorm the rewrite for we live‘s bridge last week…but when i sat down to work on it today i couldn’t remember everything she said, and she’s not here. so i’ll have to tackle that later on.

i also made a new song-by-song list of all the songs and what i need to do apart from the obvious stuff*. it’s not as long as you might think, so that was good to see. there are 17 songs total but since my next goal is to get feedback on the main ones there are only 15 that i need to finish first. the other two are i know, which was written for someone else (and apart from some kind of miracle will never make it on the album), and bethany’s song, who’s inclusion doesn’t depend on anyone’s opinion but bethany’s.

*by obvious stuff i mean re-listening to all the recorded vocals to see if they work and redoing any parts, adding any extra fill bits to anything that needs it, EQing everything and getting the mix right so they can be ready for mastering. i’ll do all that after i finish my list and have all the songs fixed and with vocals.
