well i mentioned my vocal recording quandry to my buddy at the well last night and he was telling me that as long as the whole thing isn’t crap that i should just use the first take out of however many i’ve got as the base. i don’t know why that small and simple of a thing didn’t occur to me before, but it made sense and didn’t make some of the songs seems like such a mess. so i started with some of the simpler or slower songs (which seem to generally be a little easier for me vocally) and took the first track, which in most cases turned out to be upwards of 80% good on it’s own. then when i came to a part i didn’t like i went to see if any of the other takes had a good version of that part, did some volume adjustment if it was needed…and wham bam thank you ma’am i had myself a decent set of vocals for the song.
so really i’ve finished up all but like 5 of the songs on that basis, which is great progress. it pretty much took all day but it was worth it.
a lot of the songs i’ve got left have a much bigger working range that i’m in throughout the song, or have a lot more instruments to try and mix things around or something. of those i got about halfway through king forever and are you here. so really only 3 songs remain untouched after today. with luck i can finish the rest of these tomorrow and then maybe track some harmony wednesday. i’ve got them mixed in headphones but still have to mix on speakers as well…but maybe this thursday deadline still has a chance of being met after all. i’m fortunate that most of my work at the moment is waiting on clients to get stuff to me, so i’ve got time to do this stuff — we’ll see how long that holds out.
oh i also redid the toy piano today. it wasn’t working as it was but i think it works well now.
