4:30pm to about 11:30pm this time.
today was mostly about acoustics. we used a couple different mic patterns for recording it which was interesting to me; both came out sounding really good. i did king forever first and it took several tries but it came out great. not the end was next and it was pretty much the same story there; took a few go’s but it came out good at the end. since there’s drums in the song now, when they come in we decided to add another acoustic track to fill it out a bit; used darian’s “Franciscan” guitar to play that. it’s a piece of crap.
but it actually sounds really nice to use an older guitar with a different sound behind a newer one. so don’t ever throw away old guitars. especially if they are “Franciscans”.
i ended up using the same piano part from the previous version of not the end in this one. it was tricky to get it to line up right…i don’t know what i did to my sessions that made them behave oddly but they did. tempos off, stuff like that. i apparently introduced goblins into darian’s equipment too because it was acting up all night and usually doesn’t. but anyway we got the piano lined up and that song is about done. we’re talking about possibly adding a violin part to the bridge so we’ll see how that goes.
questions got rebuilt using the same synth parts on the bottom, then i did the acoustic part over that. it was tricky; took more takes than the others, but i think we’ve got a winner there now. then we moved onto the toy piano, which looked even funnier than it did in my apartment when it was all mic’d up with nice microphones, displaying its chicken and painted finery. quite a sight.
so now all that’s left is really just electric guitars and vocals. i think there may be a tambourine on king forever that i forgot about, but that’s no big deal to add in. i’m scheduled to go in next tuesday before thanksgiving and finish up that stuff, then we’re looking at a first mix the next week, which is great. it will be interesting to hear everything mixed together….
