i have been a delinquent blogger, and for this i hope you accept my dearest apologies. although i do stand by the fact that there hasn’t been much going on that is blogworthy*.
so i never updated you on the studio situation properly – what all the potentials are (or were) and what happened. here’s where we are:
studio 1: the “swanky downtown” spot.
we checked this out a few weeks ago. everything inside is immaculate, the guys that work there are friendly, and they have in their hands just about every instrument, amp, pedal, and piece of equipment you could ever want. huge recording rooms, too. but alas, you get what you pay for — meaning i could probably never afford to record here in a million years. axed.
studio 2: the “awesome looking on the web” spot.
i emailed multiple times to no avail. no phone number on the website, so i couldn’t call. then travis (the engineer) used some crazy thing called a “phone book”, a technology with which i am unfamiliar, and found a number. imagine that? turns out they use a board and setup that he’s not familiar with. axed.
studio 3: the “i know a guy who knows a guy” spot.
i’ve a friend who has a cousin who has a studio downtown somewhere near or in atlantic station – so it must be pretty swanky. but the cousin seems to be out of town at every moment of his life. we’ve been trying to track the guy down and get in touch with him for literally 2 months. we’re always “close” to getting in touch with him but never can. i’ve all but given up on ever hearing from him…but this one is still on the table i suppose until we make a final decision.
studio 4: the “not really a studio” spot.
a friend advised me about another place downtown that has recording equipment but isn’t really a studio — thus they’d be extremely cheap. turns out it’s more of a community arts center type of place. i go down to visit and walk in — it’s rather cramped and everyone in there ignores me. i couldn’t really handle the vibe in that place anyway, and vibe, from what i hear, is important in something like this. axed.
studio 5: the “the guy who owns it seems really cool” spot.
travis talked to the guy and we were supposed to see it right after the swanky downtown one but the owner has a lot of family troubles at the moment and had to cancel. i just got back from it about 45 minutes ago. right now this is the clear winner; it’s smaller, but it’s still got good equipment and a good room and it’s definitely in the budget range. little bit dark in there, but bring in some more lamps and it should be good to go. oh, and the guy is in fact cool. we talked to him for a good while this morning.
so we’re getting there, i think. unless by some miracle the cousin guy gets back to me i see us probably booking this place – we’re hoping to get some details talked out in the next week or so to see for sure.
so it’s getting closer by the day — finally! i can’t believe how long this has taken and i’m definitely ready to put this thing down and get it out there.
