still at it. somehow i’ve gotten behind (or travis has sped up like crazy) so i listened to mixes of 4 new songs yesterday, which was crazy. it’s a time-consuming process to listen to everything on 2 sets of speakers, over and over again for little nuances and things that need fixing. it’s compounded by the fact that apparently most people mix in the same room, not 4 hours apart. so in most cases, if a guy says to his engineer “hey turn that up”, he hears it right away and can then go “turn that up more still.” for us, i go “hey, turn that up” and then he makes the change, re-prints a new mix, uploads it, tells me, i download it, email back and say “turn that up more still”, then he repeats the whole process…..you see where this goes. so it’s taken longer than either of us anticipated.
but the end is near; there are only 3 songs left that i’ve not heard a mix of yet: great, nothing else, and king forever. i think he’s working on ‘great’ now. so i’ll probably need to go ahead and choose my production company this week, and maybe even start the design. i’m actually looking forward to the design part a lot – designing the insert ought to be fun. there won’t be anything on the cover to speak of, really, so nothing much to do there. but it will be fun to mess around with the rest of it.
things are still sounding great, too. it’s weird hearing everything so many times, so i try to have some fresh ears (bethany) on hand for second opinions whenever possible. i kind of get numb to a lot of it, which i hear is just kind of what happens when you make a record. but i’m still really happy with everything so far.
