getting your cd info to pop up in itunes

this was another question i had that i just recently figured out – how do you get itunes or whatever music program you use to automatically fill in the track names for your cd when people put it in their computer for importing?

i use itunes, and i know it (and many other players) use the Gracenote CD Database to find album and track info for record. i noticed when i put other cd’s in in the past that it would flash “accessing Gracenote CDDB” across the top while it looked for the info. so naturally i googled gracenote and found their website, but couldn’t find any kind of submission form. so i put in a request for more info and a nice lady named Julie got back to me.

it’s really, really easy to do. when you first put your cd in it will look for the track names and not find them. so, in itunes you just edit the info for each song and fill in the correct info – artist, song name, etc – that you want to show up. then all you do is go under the ‘advanced’ menu and hit ‘submit CD track names’, wait a few days and bingo! good to go. you should also apparently go back in a few days and force it to “get cd track names” to make sure it was submitted.

ideally though, going forward, one would do this while the cd is being pressed — so that the first buyer that gets one and puts it in itunes already has all the info pop up….but alas. lesson learned. :)

the weirdest thing with mine, though….i know it didn’t pop up right away for me, and my dad and others said the same. but one of my friends said the info came up for him — and when i went into itunes just now to make it happen it already pulled up all the right info! so someone has either figured out how to do this before me and did so anonymously, or something weird is going on.

either way…from here on, when you pop it in it should come up right away. :)

Cool. I put all the info in manually, but I don't think I did anything to submit it. So, it wasn't me. :)
